How To Build A Soundproof Beam

Sometimes you need to soundproof over a strange or oddly shaped part of your room. In this article I will explain how we soundproofed the center beam in my studio.

The Overall Concept

Soundproofing over the beam was not something I had read about or had plans for, however I took the basic soundproofing concepts I had used so far and applied them to the beam. The basic design is to create a false beam around the actual beam. This makes it so the ceiling drywall is touching the false beam not the actual beam thus decoupling the ceiling from the outside roof structure.

To begin with, we attached a two long pieces of 2x6's to the beam using I-B3 acoustic clips. This would decouple the real beam from our false beam. We used some 2x4 spacers attached to the top of our 2x6 to create something for the sides of our false beam to nail into.

We then attached three sides to our beam by nailing them into the hanging 2x6. Next, we put Green Glue on the inside of the second layer of wood siding and attached that to our first layer of beam siding. Lastly, we stained the beam and sealed where the false beam and the drywall meet with acoustic caulk.

It is not an overly complicated process, but still takes care to ensure that it is done just right.
